History of Roulette

Roulette is an interesting game offered by many land based as well as online casinos. Players get a choice while playing as the game has many variants. The history of roulette dates back to the 1800s with many claims having being made about its origin, but none proved so far.

It is believed that the game of roulette was in existence in the 1800s, became popular and spread across the USA and Europe. The name of the Blanc family is quite well known as the pioneers in roulette. When Germany banned gambling in the 1860s, the Blanc family relocated to the only legal casino operation in Monte Carlo, Europe.

The Blanc family deserves kudos for giving the rich and the famous of the European society a gambling Mecca which offered them great gaming opportunities. The single zero roulette wheel is said to have become popular then and this version of the game spread from Europe to other parts of the world. It was only in the US that the double zero wheel remained popular despite single zero wheel being the top choice for players in different countries.

There are myths and legends about how the roulette table was created. One legend says that the late Francois Blanc is supposed to have bargained with the devil to obtain the secrets of roulette table. The basis of legend is that the total of all the numbers on the roulette wheel adds up to 666, which is considered to be the number of the devil.

There have been umpteen claims about the origin of roulette, though unproved; roulette is said to have originated in Tibet with monks being credited with starting this game while some believe that a French mathematician created roulette while searching the concept of perpetual motion. The most credible claim seems to date back to France where it was believed that French immigrants played the game in the 18th century and introduced the same to the rest of the world.
